Each season we evolve—it's human nature. I often think about how I'll want to express this notion in my personal style. It's what informs the first step of the design process between Traci and me. She and I start our process in different places. Traci experiments with shapes—she manipulates materials on the form, and I watch her step back and cock her head. I know she's trying to place how the design will move; does it satisfy what she's craving? I start with writing. What changes am I sensing, and where do I feel complacent? Just putting that on paper allows me to figure out how to express these changes visually—how to move on from where I feel stuck to something new(er). There's a saying, "I'll know it when I see it." For me, yes that's true, but until I've written this out, I can't get to a place where I see things. Visuals of Brutalist and Bauhaus architecture coupled with a deep dive into the history was the click for me. They were distinct movements, but both are rooted in the idea of expressing ideas in a raw, sculptural form that emphasized function and simplicity. Traci's process had led her to the German artist Ursula Sax's Geometric Ballet (1935).
Both of our references intersected at the idea of opposing elements creating something far more interesting than can be achieved in its singularity. Grit and Elegance. A balance of opposites that feel very right, right now.
I created a color palette of shades of grey browns and green sharpened with black and whites. Neutrals that are blatantly practical yet inherently sophisticated and graceful are combined with a range of denims and fabrics that offer a sturdiness, feeling new and fresh. Clean, modern lines paired with high-interest fuller silhouettes, crafted in unapologetically luxurious European fabrics give strength to built-in ease.
Many things can be true at once. Clever and serious, soft with edge, carefree but purposeful—creative and pragmatic. Each season we challenge ourselves personally to be more...(anyone can fill in their blank here). We think this way. We live this way. And when our style visually reflects this, it helps us feel whole.
