A conversation with Amy Smilovic and Dirk Standen. Dirk is the Dean of the School of Fashion at the Savannah College of Art and Design. His legacy in the fashion industry, however, extends far beyond his appointment at SCAD in 2022. He ventured into fashion journalism in the early 2000s, contributing to major media outlets including Vanity Fair, Vogue, GQ, and more before becoming the Editor-in-chief of Style.com from 2005-2015, followed by a position as Editor-in-chief of 23 Stories from 2015-2018, and finally the founder of DS Digital in July 2019. He has been globally recognized for his contributions to the world of fashion journalism, winning the Condé Nast Agency Award at Cannes Lions in 2018, the MIN Best of the Web Hall of Fame in 2012, Webby’s People’s Voice award in 2006, ’08, ’15, and much more. The discussion covers the range of Dirk’s career, how his path was perhaps shaped by his childhood predilections, and where he sees the future of the fashion industry heading, now largely characterized by the outlook and influence of his students at SCAD.
